Released in 1929 as the successor to the widely revered Rolls-Royce Phantom I, the Phantom II improved upon its predecessor by utilizing a new crossflow cylinder head, partially synchronized gearbox, and revised rear suspension, resulting in improved handling. All Phantom IIs, including those bound for the US market, were constructed at Rolls-Royce’s Derby factory.

This Phantom II, chassis 203 AMS, was completed in April 1932, and shipped to Rolls- Royce’s Springfield, Massachusetts, factory in August 1933. There it received rakish Newport Sedanca de Ville coachwork by Brewster & Co., one of just 18 Phantom IIs to receive such coachwork. The Rolls-Royce was commissioned by San Francisco-based British socialite Mabelle Armstrong-Taylor, who received it in October of that year.

Ms. Armstrong-Taylor retained the Phantom II for 13 years, after which it went through a succession of New York-based owners before being acquired by collector Richard Atwell of Texas, circa 1978. Mr. Atwell commissioned Enfield Auto Restoration of Connecticut to restore the Phantom II. It was later acquired by attorney John O’Quinn of Houston, joining his extensive collection of American and European classics. Paul Toberty purchased the Phantom II in 2011 and, following a refresh that included the addition of wheel covers, exhibited the car at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®. As one of just 125 Phantom IIs specially built in left-hand drive, this Rolls-Royce offers discerning collectors entry into top concours events worldwide.
