An Innovative and Stylish Japanese Icon
Launched in 1967, the Mazda Cosmo Sport was the first production automobile powered by an innovative two-rotor Wankel engine. Its rarity, futuristic styling, and pioneering engineering have made it one of Japan’s most iconic sports cars. Introduced in 1968, the Series II increased horsepower to 128 and introduced a five-speed manual gearbox, longer wheelbase, larger wheels, and servo-assisted brakes. Delivered new in Japan to its first owner in 1972, this Series II example was eventually exported to the US in 2009 and became part of an American collection. It was then serviced and repainted by noted marque specialist Glenn Roberts. The Cosmo’s interior features seats upholstered in black vinyl with houndstooth cloth inserts, and the car is also equipped with rare factory air conditioning, with a sticker identifying the system’s manufacturer remaining affixed to the windshield. Accompanying the Mazda are its tool kit and jack, various documents in Japanese, and a Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car calendar in which the car appeared. The Mazda Cosmo captured the Space Age’s boundless optimism, pairing spaceship-inspired styling with its advanced rotary engine, signaling a thrilling new future of technology and innovation. This Series II example offers a rare opportunity to acquire the Mazda that established the marque’s enduring connection to the rotary engine.
