The Bora was Maserati’s first mid-engine production road car, and paired with the firm’s fantastic quad-cam V-8, a modern monocoque chassis, and Giorgetto Giugiaro’s angular design, it offered a compelling package. The stunning new model featured a signature brushed-stainless roof panel, four-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension, and utilized Citroën’s sophisticated high-pressure LHM hydraulics for various systems, including its brakes, clutch, and retractable headlights. Fast and refined, it built on Maserati’s longstanding tradition of building sporting automobiles ideally suited for grand-touring.
This example was completed in July 1973 as a US-market 4.9-liter example, originally finished in Rame Metallizzato (Metallic Copper) over Senape (Mustard) leather and equipped with a Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio. Copies of factory records show that it was delivered new to Maserati Automobiles Inc. of Los Angeles. Documented by records on file, this Bora received more than $81,000 in mechanical work from 2015 through 2019, including engine and gearbox rebuilds, upgraded SPAL cooling fans, an inline electric water pump, rebuilt alternator, and renewed clutch hydraulics. Accompanying this unusually well-documented 4.9-liter Bora are an owner’s manual, tool kit, and extensive history file, as well as Maserati archive documentation, including a Certificate of Origin, Technical Certificate, and copies of factory order forms.
