Replacing the beloved W113 280 SL in 1971, for 18 years the R107 proved itself a more than worthy successor in markets worldwide. While all US versions were equipped with V-8 power and automatic transmissions, the rest of the world was offered additional sporting engine choices. This remarkable 1984 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was delivered in Belgium with its 2.8-liter DOHC six mated to a rare five-speed manual gearbox. Making its way to the US circa 1987, the 280 SL’s speedometer installed at federalization showed just over 16,600 miles at the time of cataloguing. Some of these miles were added recently when the consignor campaigned the car on the 2024 Copperstate 1000 rally, with over $5,000 having been spent to ensure that the car performed flawlessly. It was even displayed in the dining room at an invitation-only Copperstate 1000 banquet – such is the level of its presentation throughout.
This rare and pristine Mercedes-Benz is finished in Anthracite over a gray interior and is presented in its harmoniously designed European-specification trim, including headlights and bumpers. The consignor states that the fluids have been changed, fuel hoses have been replaced, and wheel bearings have been regreased, among other preventative maintenance. The brightwork, rubber trim, and black canvas top present essentially as new, and overall, the sprightly SL is difficult to fault. Presented with Dutch-language manuals, concours judging sheets, and a history file, this intriguing, seldom-seen 280 SL aims to please in all respects.
